Tollwood Winter Festival
Lighting up the night sky at the Theresienweise is the soft glow of the green, blue and yellow lit tents under which tourists and city folk alike sit to enjoy musicians, international cuisine, drama groups and live performances. Some performances require that you purchase tickets (see website). While some may be wondering if it’s too cold to have an outdoor festival during the harsh Munich winter, they quickly change their minds as hot glühwein (spiced wine) is overflowing at only 2.50€ a mug. Lime slices swim in steaming glasses of caipirinihas, warming the drinker from head to toe. If cups of hot alcohol aren’t in your cards, you can find some of the tastiest homemade hot chocolate as well as assortments of dark, milk and white chocolate dipped fruits. The paths are lined with food kiosks offering everything from falafel to pizza, ensuring that you’ll find some tasty treats to eat as you wander around the grounds.
Like any German Christmas market, Tollwood hosts various booths filled with crafts and handiwork made by craftsmen from around Bavaria. One can find winter slippers lined with warm sheep fur, intricate ornaments made from long, thin slices of wood as well as homemade soaps, teas and other little goodies.
As with the winter in Munich being a bit “iffy&lrquo; so to speak, the gravel filled walkways throughout the festival become wet. I suggest wearing a pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting too dirty, as well as a nice warm coat, hat and gloves as the evenings get quite cold. So, get bundled up and get on your way! Tollwood is open until the 31st of December, making an interesting and unique New Years Eve option.
Transport: Take the U4 or U5 to “Theresienwiese” and just follow the crowd
